Telefónica presents its Contemporary Photography Collection at the Tomie Ohtake High School in São Paulo

Fundación Telefónica is presenting a selection of works from Telefónica's Contemporary Photography Collection at the Tomie Ohtake High School in São Paulo.

The Tomie Ohtake High School is one of the city's leading institutions. It aims to represent the latest trends in national and international art, as well as the artistic works produced in the last 50 years. After being exhibited in São Paulo and at the Fundación Telefónica Centre in Lima, the exhibition will subsequently travel to the city's Periférico Caracas exhibition centre.

The collection was started in 2002 and now features more than 80 photographs by such major photographers as Cindy Sherman, Vik Muniz, John Coplans and, Zhang Huan. This is a rich collection of photographs from the period between 1973 and 2007 which illustrates some of the most important developments in photography over recent years. These include the appropriations of Richard Prince and Louise Lawler, Marina Abramovic's reflections on the body, and the images of the Düsseldorf school created around the work of the Bechers and their students Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth and Candida Höffer.

The 39 pieces included in this exhibition have been divided into five major blocks which reflect the main conceptual focal points of the collection: the body, identity, architecture, nature and simulations. The exhibition represents a tour of the recent history of photography, now freed from all debt to the documentary genre and established as the 21st century's most representative form of artistic expression.
