With nearly 2000m² of space, the main objective of Periférico Caracas is to publicise contemporary artistic displays which take place in Caracas. After being exhibited in Sao Paulo and at the Fundación Telefónica Centre in Lima, the exhibition will arrive in the capital city of Venezuela for the first time.
The collection was started in 2002 and now features more than 80 photographs by major photographers such as Cindy Sherman, Vik Muniz, John Coplans and Zhang Huan, among others. This is a rich collection of photographs taken between 1973 and 2007 which illustrates some of the most important developments in photography over recent years. These include the appropriationism of Louise Lawler, Marina Abramovic's reflections on the body, and the images of the Düsseldorf school created around the work of the Bechers and their students Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth and Candida Höffer.
The 39 pieces included in this exhibition have been divided into five major blocks which reflect the main conceptual focal points of the collection: the body, identity, architecture, nature and simulations. The exhibition takes a trip through the recent history of photography, now freed from all debt to the documentary genre and established as the 21st century's most representative form of artistic expression.
