The Fundación Telefónica: Twelve years managing the Telefónica Group’s social and cultural activities

The activities of the Telefónica Group, a telecommunications sector leader, contribute to the economic, social and cultural development of the countries in which it is present. Nevertheless, beyond its strictly corporate ends, the Telefónica Group is committed to improving the quality of life and promoting equal opportunities, especially amongst the most disadvantaged. This is why the Group, through its foundation, has been undertaking important social and cultural activities for the past twelve years.

The Fundación Telefónica currently operates in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela, joined in late 2009 by the Fundación Telefónica Ecuador. Each of these nine foundations has been set up in full accordance with the applicable legislation in the country in question.

Furthermore, areas such as the Social Programmes for Children and Telefónica Volunteers extend the work of the foundation to another five Latin-American countries (El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama and Uruguay). Since 2009, the Fundación Telefónica has also collaborated in the social activities undertaken by the Telefónica Group’s local operators in the Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom.

A global strategy adapted to a local level

The Fundación Telefónica is a corporation of Foundations that has a global strategic focus, from which a common mission, aims and working methods have been drawn based on five areas of trans-national action. In order to give new impetus to this global vision, in 2009 an operating model has been defined and implemented so as to formalise decision-making processes, improve operating efficiency and optimise the use of resources.

The Fundación Telefónica undertakes its activities in line with the social realities of each of the countries in which it works, and therefore has a process in place to maintain permanent dialogue with each of its stakeholder groups. This dialogue allows effective strategies to be put in place which can be adapted to the real expectations and needs of each of communities in which they are to be implemented.
