Objectives of the Program

Strategic Objectives of the Proniño Program

General goal: To contribute significantly to the eradication of child labor in Latin America by means of continued quality education.

Global strategy: Proniño wants to defend the concept of Integral Quality as an key element in building solid leadership for the eradication of child labor in Latin America.

Strategic Focal Points:

  • Comprehensive protection: working with different intervention approaches: health and nutrition, education, free time, transformation of cultural patterns, income generation, etc., all involving the participant children, families, schools and communities.
  • Quality of education: To reinforce the educational processes at the education centers attended by Proniño, through the inclusion of ICT.
  • Socio-Institutional Reinforcement: To generate and spread knowledge about child labor in order to strengthen social awareness; to support those working in the program; and to build a network of organizations that work in this area.

Proniño, an Intervention Model Guaranteeing Comprehensive Care

"The Proniño program is a model of aiding social development through education. Activities focused on low-income families can help to combat inequality in general, and in particular, child labor". Muhammad Yunus, Founder of Grameen Bank, Recipient of the Prince of Asturias Award for Concord, 1998, and the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.

Proniño efforts to advance its mission to help eradicate child labor in Latin America is based on three strategic approaches: comprehensive protection measures that succeed in changing the family, educational and community environments of working children and adolescents; continuous high quality schooling and support from the social agents and institutions involved in the fight against child labor.

Comprehensive Protection:
  • Broad scale intervention with children and adolescents: scholarships and care for their basic needs (health and nutrition, school support, free time and psycho-pedagogical help).
  • Integrated action applied to the family, school and community (transforming cultural patterns, generation of income, and new concepts in education).
Quality of Education:
  • Commitment and active participation of schools.
  • Installation of Fundación Telefónica Classrooms and training of teachers in the use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) (EducaRed Program).
  • Improvement in the infrastructure of education centers.
Socio-institutional Reinforcement:
  • Promotion of networks and alliances in order to care for minors in matters of health, nutrition, identity, and protection.
  • Generation of specialist knowledge and creation of tools for the social agents who intervene when problems arise.
  • Campaigns of mobilizing the public to prevent and eradicate child labor.

Considerable effort has been made to determine the goals and the top-priority strategies for action.  Through sustainable, high quality social intervention, Proniño has helped to construct a regional identity. This work depends on the 105 prestigious NGOs working directly with Proniño, in addition to the 2,596 education centers (2,177 schools and 419 care centers) involved.
