Investigations and studies
Among the more relevant research projects presented by Debate and Knowledge in 2008 are the following:
- Governance of the Internet: Challenges and Opportunities. This study by UPM Professor of Telecommunications, Jorge Perez, deals with the more controversial questions surrounding the Internet: Who runs or controls the Web? The results of this study have been published in a book titled Internet Governance: Contributions to the Global Debate on Web Management and Control.
- Integration of the Internet into Spanish education: Present Situation and Future Scenarios. Exhaustive analysis of the processes of integration of ICT for educational and professional use in primary and secondary schools. At the end of 2008, the project was directed by two teachers of Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC).
- Socio-economic Development and Mobile Communications in Latin America. Coordinated by the renowned expert, Manuel Castell, this project, which will finish in 2009, has involved fieldwork, discussion and analysis on the macroeconomic impact of mobile telephones in various Latin American countries.
- The Economic Value of Spanish: A Multinational Company. With a planned duration of three years, the project analyzes the Spanish language (currently spoken by more than 438 million people throughout the world) and its role in generating development and wealth. is the project is directed by Professor of Economics, Jose Luis García Delgado.
- Strangers to Technology and to Culture. Started in 2007, this is the first research project promoted by the Debate and Knowledge program outside Spain and the first to be carried out in Argentina. With the theme of global impact, the study, directed by Argentine philosopher Néstor García Canclini, analyzes the migration of an analogical generation to a digital one, from a regional viewpoint.
- Mobile Telephones and Banking in Latin America. Promoted jointly with Multilateral Investments Funds (FOMIN) from the Inter-American Development Bank and the AFI (Analistas Financieros Internacionales), this study, which began in 2008, deals with the opportunities mobile telephones offer for bringing the non-banking population of Latin America into the financial system. The project is being carried out in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.
- Innovation in Latin America. Promoted jointly with OECD and the INSEAD business school, this study, which began 2008, builds a comparative index to provide insight into innovation in countries of the region, as well as to detect possible areas for improvement. The study also includes specific examples of good practice in innovation.
In 2008, Fundación Telefónica Collection /Ariel published 14 titles, of which almost 19,300 copies have been distributed. To these we should add another 700 copies of the re-published works,
Atlas of the Spanish Language Around the World and The Economics of Spanish. An Introduction, published in 2007.
- The Information Society in Spain 2008. This report, which has become a seminal text on the new technology environment, is a meticulous study and description of the current situation and the level of development of the Information Society in Spain.
- ICT in Future Local Administrations. This is a study of current Information and Communications Technologies used by the Spanish government offices and the challenges faced.
- Internet Governance: Contributions to the Global Debate on Web Management and Control. The book, which contains results of the study, The Governance of Internet: Challenges and Opportunities, analyses interesting questions: Is it possible for the Internet to break up? Should we change the architecture of the web to make it safer? etc.
- White paper on the 2010 Digital University. This book suggests that the model for the university of the future must involve good governance and use of ICT, which will allow it to update its knowledge more quickly, improve its capacity for innovation and adaptation to the new environment and to contribute to a fully integrated Knowledge Society.
- Journalism in the Age of Internet. Keys for Understanding the Current Situation of Journalistic Information in Spain. Work that deals with the general treatment of journalistic information on the Web, examining comparative differences between printed and digital media, in light of the ever-reducing differences between traditional and emerging media.
- ICT and the Health Sector in Latin America This sector is facing important challenges for its future, both immediate and long-term. The aim of this report is to present an overall vision of the challenges regarding health in some Latin American countries, with emphasis on how ICT can contribute to responding to these challenges.
- Productivity and Balance Between Work and Personal Life. Work productivity is a key factor in the development of any economy because it improves market competition and allows wages to rise. In order to ensure a good level of productivity, there must be a balance between work and personal life.
- The Interactive Generation in Ibero-America. Children and Adolescents in Front of Their Screens. This book, which analyzes the use of the television, the Internet, mobile phones and video games by children and adolescents, is the first and largest study of new technologies available for these groups in Latin America. Portuguese translation also available.
- The Paths of Spanish. Unique publication that contains contributions, most of them literary, from writers, academics, politicians and specialists on different matters, who all participated in the various activities of the project, The Economic Value of Spanish: a Multinational Company.

Through the Debate and Knowledge program, every year Fundación Telefónica organizes an extensive program of highly popular events and conferences presented in different formats: presentations, one-day sessions, seminars, etc. Some of the 2008 activities are listed:
Presentation of Published Works
- Fundación Telefónica presentó en el mes de febrero en Madrid y más tarde en Ciudad de México y Santiago de Chile, en los meses de octubre y noviembre, respectivamente, dos de los libros sobre el Valor Económico: el informe publicado en el año 2007 Economía del Español. Una introducción y el Atlas de la lengua española around the world.
- Pilar Diezhandino, directora y coordinadora del libro Periodismo en la era de Internet, analizó las diferencias de contenido y tratamiento de la información de 22 medios escritos y digitales, durante la presentación de la obra en Madrid y Lima en los meses de abril y octubre.
- Fundación Telefónica presentó en mayo en Lima y Santiago de Chile el libro Medios de comunicación. Tendencias 07. El Escenario Iberoamericano, publicado en el año 2007.dirigido por el catedrático de la Universidad de Málaga, Bernardo Díaz Nosty.
- La obra La Generación Interactiva en Iberoamérica. Niños y adolescentes ante las pantallas se presentó en noviembre en Bogotá, Buenos Aires y Santiago de Chile y durante el mes de diciembre en las ciudades de Caracas, Lima, Cuidad de México y Madrid, donde se convocó a los distintos grupos de interés que participaron en este estudio.
- Fundación Telefónica presentó en los meses de septiembre, noviembre y diciembre en la UIMP (Santander), Madrid y Málaga, respectivamente, la obra La Gobernanza de Internet.
Meetings, workshops and seminars
- In February, the cities of Caracas and São Paulo welcomed a one-day meeting with opinion-makers from public and private sectors to tackle the subject of the ICT’s contribution to the development of social cohesion in Latin America. This was tied to research underway in twelve Latin American countries.
- The quality of Spanish on the Web was the central theme of the four Neologism Meetings, organized in April by the Department for the Spanish Language at the School of Communication Sciences, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos de Madrid.
- In May, Fundación Telefónica organized a lecture in Madrid, “Gender and Cultures of Technology and Work, Continuity and Change" given by Professor Judy Wajcman, professor of the National University of Australia and the Oxford Internet Institute. This lecture dealt with the relationship between gender and cultures in technology and work.
- In May the Casa de America in Madrid, and in October, the Chapultepec Castle in Mexico were sites chosen to host the third and fourth seminars on “The Economic Value of Spanish: A Multinational Company". In both cases, renowned experts in the linguistics and norms of Spanish, economics of language and the effects of ICT on language use debated the economic dimensions of Spanish.
- With the support of the Canadian and Mexican embassies, in August the second public discussion took place on the project “Foreigners in Technology and Culture" at Espacio Fundación Telefónica in Buenos Aires.
- In August of 2008, in Sao Paulo, and in September, in Caracas, Fundación Telefónica organized workshops on the research topic, “Mobile Telephones and Expanding Banking to Citizens in Latin America”. This was in cooperation with the Multilateral Investment Fund (FOMIN) of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
- Fundación Telefónica took part in the creation of the Interactive Generation Forum, along with Telefónica International and the General Technical Office of Telefónica’s Presidency.
The TELOS Magazine Debuts its New Layout
Twenty-five years since its creation, and 77 issues later (the last four of these in 2008), the magazine TELOS, published by Fundación Telefónica is an international leader in communications in Spanish. TELOS started 2008 with a new design for its updated structure. New sections and content stand out, along with prominent authors in the field of communication, innovation, digital economy and the Knowledge Society. The magazine is published online at

This design changes were not for aesthetic reasons; rather, they reflect a desire for constant change when incorporating new topics and sections. In 2008, the subjects covered in the published issues: Research in Political Communication: Current Trends, Challenges and Problems; Help for the Press in Europe; The Rise of Social Networks; and Creativity and Innovation in Digital Culture, plus other topics of interest.
