The role played by ICT in development

September 2009 / *Only available in spanish

Based on a conceptual framework which includes academic research of the economic impact of ICT, the study has been conceived as a contribution to the dialogue between governments, the private sector and civil society in the region. The fundamental premise that underlies this work is that Latin America has completed the phase of privatisation of operators and opening of the markets of Telecommunications. The combination of privatisation, liberalisation and technological revolution has allowed the region to settle some of the key elements of the so-called social digital chasm in voice telephony. The book includes recommendations regarding tools and policies that Latin American countries should put into practice in order to maximise the impact of ICT on the economy.

The economy of the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language

June 2009 / *Only available in spanish

However, this book examines the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language and for non-speakers of Spanish as economic sectors and industries which generate employment and added value which contribute to the development of the country's economy and wealth.

The quality of Spanish on the net

May 2009 / *Only available in spanish

This is a collective investigation which blazes a trail in dealing with the phenomenon of the bursting of new means of communication upon the media scene: the web page, electronic mail, chat, SMS, etc. and especially their repercussion on the uses of the Spanish language. The scaremongers who predicted that written language would fall into disuse as a result of the universalisation of the use of mobile telephones not only realised how wrong they had been but also witnessed a boom in writing the like of which had not been seen since the invention of the printing press. However, these instruments are not transparent; rather they influence the way we perceive and understand the world. Notebook 16
