Almost a century after its archaeological discovery, and thanks to recent studies carried out on document archives from the 16th century, there are good grounds to support the idea that the citadel of Machu Picchu was - like the pyramids of the Pharaohs in Egypt or the tomb of the emperor Chin Shi Huan in China - the luxurious and well-tended mausoleum of the Inca Pachakuteq, the founder and first emperor of Tawantinsuyu.
The 'Machu Picchu' website contains a great deal of information and multimedia content on this extraordinary site.
