Since its restoration, L'Almudaina Royal Palace has become a mandatory stopover for all visitors to the city of Palma, which can be seen from its privileged position overlooking the bay and the city.
L'Almudaina, which in Arabic means "citadel" or "last fortress", is a notably defensive building whose walls sum up the history of the Balearic Islands and which was always the official headquarters of the political powers, because of its privileged location overlooking the bay and the city.
All of the civilisations and cultures that have passed through the Islands have left their mark on L'Almudaina Royal Palace. Thus, the building has we know it today has received the imprint of the great Muslim constructions in the 10th and 12th centuries, as well as the Christian transformations in the 13th century. In 1963, the Spanish National Heritage authorities began work on restoring the Palace, with a view to reinstating the 14th century castle that Jaime II used for the King's Court and refurbishing it again as a royal residence.
Inside the building, the highlights are the gothic chapel of St. Ann with its Romanesque doorway, the Queen's courtyard and the Homage tower crowned by an angel, where the remains of Roman and Arabic constructions may be seen. The palace is surrounded by the famous King's garden, which overlook the bay walls, with stairs that gives access to the cathedral.
