Djehuty Project

The Djehuty project, an initiative by the Spanish National Council for Advanced Scientific Research, with the support of Telefónica Móviles and the collaboration of the Fundación Telefónica, is the first Spanish archaeological expedition to study a tomb in Egypt.

To be specific, the purpose of the project is to excavate, restore and publish results on the tombs of Djehuty and Hery, who were two high-level officials in the government of Queen Hatshepsut, the only woman to reign in Egypt during the Pharaonic era, between the years 1,500 and 1,450 BC. These tombs, which are located in the necropolis known as Dra Abu el-Naga, on the west bank of the former Thebes (Luxor), are considered to be part of the historical heritage of humanity. The Spanish expedition, which is led by the prestigious Egyptologist José Manuel Galán (PhD) is making discoveries of pricelss historic and scientific value, with the approval and collaboration of the Egyptian authorities via the Luxor Supreme Council of Antiquities.

The reconstruction of a board that used to belong to a scribe master, the discovery of reliefs from the tombs of Hery and Djehuty and the discovery of the remains of a mummification deposit were some of the tasks carried out in this third archaeological campaign, which is breathing new life into scientific Egyptology in our country.

All the details and photographs of the excavation and the other work, as well as the main findings, can be followed on a dynamic and enjoyable basis via the project's web page, which has been drawn up with the technological collaboration of the Fundación Telefónica. This website has become a reference point for both specialists and all those with an interest in Egyptology or who are curious about ancient Egyptian civilisation.
