Nicaragua
The Proniño program began in Nicaragua in 2002, and its goal for 2008 is for 4,500 beneficiary children and adolescents.
The objective is for child and adolescent workers to successfully complete their primary education, progressively reducing their working hours or leaving child labour altogether.
The NGOs that implement the program in Nicaragua are Padre Fabretto and CARE.
The program benefits from the active cooperation of various governmental organisations such as the Education Ministry, various educational establishments, municipal authorities and the ILO office.
It helps child and adolescent workers through school scholarships (uniforms and school equipment) and it helps parents, teachers and counsellors through awareness raising workshops.
Beneficiary children attend workshops on self-esteem and personal and social development and rights receiving direct, individual and group support through school counsellors.
Families receive support through workshops, talks with counsellors and home visits.
Educators are given workshops on raising awareness and the improvement of educational techniques to meet the needs of child workers, in schools through the provision of educational materials, books and improved spaces.
For society, Proniño is a program with a direct impact on child labour, with this very work and focus opening the doors to organisations and associations that work on this issue, despite the fact that we have not yet formed partnerships or networks, which is one of the goals for 2008.
Workshops on Scream methodology, held in cooperation with the ILO, deepening and broadening training for all teachers in the 25 educational establishments, forming theatre and dance groups in each centre for children and teachers.
