The world of Proniño

Chile

In Chile there are more than 200 thousand working children and adolescents. Aware of this reality, Fundación Telefónica and its Proniño program are cooperating to eradicate child labour through education since 2001.

In its 7 years of existence, Proniño has benefited more than 2 thousand children and adolescents in our country and currently more than 58,000 in the 13 countries it covers in Latin America.
In 2007, 1,364 direct beneficiaries were able to join the program; for 2008 the goal will be to reach 3,000 children and adolescents in work, and for the bicentenary the aim is to get eight thousand children into school.

In Chile the program is executed alongside the NGO the Council for the Defence of Children (CODENI).

Proniño looks after all the basic necessities of its pupils, from matriculation, school materials, educational psychology and psychological and social support to continuing in both secondary and higher technical education.

Proniño operates in 9 municipal level colleges and 3 CODENI centres in Santiago and the regions.

The program deals with the problem of child labour through the integrated work of 4 players: Children, parents, schools and the community.

Also, Proniño has more than 400 corporate volunteers and 15 organisations that work in partnership with the program in Chile.

Proniño Chile provides, in the various areas it works in:

INTEGRAL PROTECTION– Scholarship, educational psychology support, school support, use of free time, commitment, etc.

EDUCATIONAL QUALITY – teacher training, digital literacy, educational fairness of results.

SOCIAL AND INSTITUTIONAL STRENGTHENING – IT knowledge, IT awareness raising, institutional partnership, strengthening of agents and the setting up of networks.

Ministry of Employment and Welfare

Along with the Employment and Social Welfare ministry, we have undertaken the important commitment for the Bicentenary of Chile to expand our partnerships with municipalities, increasing the amount of children and adolescents in the Proniño program every year; not only maintaining but also increasing current social investment and participation in the National Advisory Council on the Prevention and Eradication of Child Labour.
