Concept

This collaborative work included the design and prototyping of an interactive sculpture that embodies a set of changing data in a public space. An environment was create that allows people the opportunity to focus their breathing in relation to themselves and another person and how one’s rhythms can inherently affect another person’s.
In an enclosed space made of white fabric, a person lies down and sees two sets (a red set and a white set) of ten strings suspended above their body. The fluctuation of their breath is recorded and translated visually into rhythmic movement of one set of strings. The recorded of this fluctuation continues in the space after the person has left. When the next person enters they see the artifact of the last person’s breath as their breath is recorded onto the second set of strings. This installation is cyclical process where the interaction of the each user inherently affects the experience of the following person.

Technical Information

Utilising a FSR (force sensitive resistor) strapped around the chest, a person’s breath is calculated by the rise and f all of the chest. The BX24 microcontroller converts this fluctuating value from an analog signal to a digital signal and then sends the value serially to two Motormind B motor drivers. Individual motor drivers control two motors, each turning a pair of dowels with strings suspended between them. These dowels are turned in accordance with the user’s breathing causing the rise and fall of the strings. The first user’s breath is recorded in the BX24 and continues to playback after this person has left. The second set of strings is used to record and playback the second person’s breath. The cycle then repeats.

Biography

Margot Jacobs and Jessica Findley received their graduate degrees from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University. They have work together on numerous projects that focus on interactive experiences that invoke an emotional response. These projects include "Twist," an interactive psycho-thriller screen-based game and "FRONT," voice-activated inflatable combat suits. Together they approach each project with a commitment to exploring the nature of human interaction. They look forward to future collaborations.

Margot Jacobs is from Tallahassee, Florida, USA. She received her BS for Industrial Design at the Galloway School of Architecture, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, followed by her MA from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU. Currently she is working under a fellowship in Italy at the Interaction Institute Ivrea as an interaction design research.
