TWELVE REACTIVE ART WORKS

Curated by the artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer on the occasion of the "Fiestas del 2 de mayo", Madrid's annual cultural festival, the Arte Virtual exhibition brought together technological installations that emphasize the role of the public as an integral part of the artwork. The exhibition took place in an old tunnel of the metro undergoing reconstruction and directly below Madrid's Royal Opera House. The twelve pieces, by sixteen artists from eight countries, are the result of creative experimentation involving new technologies and are expressed in a variety of media including virtual reality, telepresence, interactive video, post-photography, sound sculpture, robotics and CD-ROM.

From April 29th to May 8th, 1994.

"In the broadest sense of the term, reactive art is that which changes with the presence and action of the public: the observer does not wait for the work to unfold before his or her eyes but rather it's the work that waits for the observer to do something to which it then reacts in one way or another. Computers make the job of surveillance easier: the works see, listen and sense the presence of their observers and react to them with a behaviour designed to reflect the message or experience that the artist wishes to communicate."
