"All films have a scene which is the heart of the film. I tried to make the heart of both films, the real and the fictional one, to coincide" - Fernando Trueba

Rehearsing a shot for the reception at the Spanish Embassy in Berlin, 1938

The Czech artist Jiri Hanzl brings together 200 photos to be exhibited in the Halls of the Telefonica Foundation. The photos cover the film shoot of "La niña de tus ojos", recreating the three settings depicted, Prague Berlin and Ronda, which were present in the project in reality and in fiction.

The movie was made last year in Prague and deals with the filming of a movie in Berlin whose action takes place in the mountainous region of Ronda during the Napoleonic invasion. These three settings serve as the basis for his photographic work.

FICTION WITHIN FICTION

Jiri Hanzl, who combines his work in cinema with a significant trajectory as an artist, captured with his camera the daily happenings over the 10-week filming as well as the contrasts between the three settings. The work is an example of artistic photography, which far surpasses the simple function of taking film stills.

In the show, which opens February 3, almost 200 photos grouped under three titles will be exhibited: Prague 1998, Berlin 1938 y Ronda 1808. These groups make reference to the film's different circumstances of space and time, mixing fiction with the reality of the daily human interaction on set.

With this exhibition, the Telefonica Foundation confirms the interest and dedication that it has traditionally shown to cinema and photography, mediums in which art and technological tools are also combined. In the last few years, the Foundation has presented to the public various exhibitions and publications, including the shows dedicated to Federico Fellini (1994) and Billy Wilder (1996), as well as the 1998 catalogue "Teléfonos de Cine" (Telephones in Cinema).

AESTHETIC VALUE AND CINEMATOGRAPHIC TESTIMONY

The curator of the exhibition, Laila Ishi-Kawa, explains that this kind of documentary - which is known as "making off" - on the life of a film shoot is usually solely for the enjoyment of those who have participated in the movie - the director, actors, technicians, set designers - and almost never reach the public. In this occasion, the aesthetic quality of the photographic material, "gives us an opportunity not only to peek into the world that exists behind the camera during a film shoot, but also to do it through an excellent photographic show which contributes to raising the standards of film stills, a complementary field to the movie-making process".

According to Ishi-Kawa, Hanzl's photos illustrate with clarity and quality the mix of reality and fiction which constitutes a film shoot: composition, the capture of gestures or their absence, drama on both the set and in the working environment. In the case of "La niña de tus ojos", fiction within fiction is also portrayed and in this sense, besides its aesthetic value, the work is triply cinematographic: it constitutes one history inside another, both seen from the dynamic of a real film shoot.

FERNANDO TRUEBA'S MEMORIES

In the catalogue of the exhibition, the director of the film Fernando Trueba relates his memories and experiences of being on set. Adding his personal commentaries to the photos, he talks about the characters, the actors, the technicians, the scenes, and the real and fictitious settings.

In a brief introduction, Trueba also tells of his emotional, intellectual and cinematographic affinity to where the movie was made, Prague, as well as the process of the film since the idea for it was proposed to him in 1992 until its realisation last year.
