PHotoEspaña99 is a cultural competition held in the city centre of Madrid where new activities are continually being developed for lovers of Photography.

The Portfolio Competition

In this exhibit any photographer who so desires can show and compare their work along side the work of prestigious national and international experts of photography. Galleries, editors, directors of photography festivals, critics and theorists have come together during the weekend of PHotoEsapaña to review the works on display and talk about them to the artists.

Paula Luttringer
Paula Luttringer (La Plata, Argentina, 1955) In 1977 was detained for five months in a CCD (secret detention centre), whilst finishing her studies of Botany at the natural Science Museum of the UNLP. Following this period of detention she went into Exile in Montevideo (Uruguay) and San Pablo (Brazil) where she worked as a trade dealer in emeralds and precious stones for the Gerais mines. From 1988 she continued developing this career in Paris and Amberes and four years later her specialised knowledge of precious stones led her to write a documentary script on the diamond trade. This was then filmed in Amberes, Jodphur (India) and Kimberley (South Africa) and presented for TV on the channel Canal+ in France in 1995. In 1993 she returned to Buenos Aires and herself enrolled at the Argentinian School of photography. In the years following this she completed several courses of photography with Adriana Lestido, Juan Travnik and Humberto Rivas. With "El Matador" prize winner of PHotoEspaña 99, Paula Luttringer presented her first two individual exhibitions in the Photogallery of TMGSM in Buenos Aires (1998) and the Modern Art Centre in Quilmes (Argentina, 1999). In addition to participating in other collective exhibitions Paula Luttringer was selected in 1996 for the exhibit "La Joven Generación" (The young generation), Argentinian National Museum of Fine Art) and was one of the finalists in the "Grand Prix SCAM du Portfolio Photographique" (París, 1998). She currently lives between Cognac (France) and Buenos Aires (Argentina) and is developing her photographic project "El Lamento de los Muros" that she began in 1997.

Raúl Belinchón
Raúl Belinchón (Valencia, 1975) began studying photography in 1996. Two years later he received a scholarship for the workshop of young journalist photographers for the II International Meeting of journalist photography, in Gijón (Spain). In 1999 one of his works, entitled "José and Familia" was published in the editorial Af/G which was then selected for the final phase of Portfolio Competition. In 1999 he held four exhibitions (Railowsky Hall, Valencia; Centre of Photography, Isla de Tenerife; Cultural Centre of Almussafes; The photography association of Guadalajara) and participated in two collective exhibitions (Switzerland Biennial and Canal de Isabel II, Madrid). He has also been selected this year for the 5th Edition of the International Biennial of Photography Photonovember (Tenerife) and obtained the Benetton scholarship of photography directed by Oliviera Toscani. He is currently studying History of Art in Valencia and photography at the School of Art.

Ignasi
López Fontanills
Ignasi López Fontanills (Premià de Mar, 1970) studied at the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona. He continues his training with courses in photography (Photojournalism in the Digital Age by Dr. Paul M. Lester from University of South California and organised by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra) as well as courses in cinema (University of Girona) and theatre. He has been in a workshop and Masterclass of photography by Jonathan Clarke. He has obtained numerous prizes and sponsorships, amongst others, Best Project at the International Festival of Alternative Cinema 96 for directing and editing in the short film category 35mm. He has been published in La Fotografía, Apotheker Journal, and editions of Baix Maresme. He has collaborated making photographs in catalogues such as Primavera Fotográfica 1998 (Generalitat), Arranz-Bravo, and Apocaliptic (Gallery Luis Adelantado). He has made photoreports for the L'Agenda de la Imatge and Mondo Sonoro. He has also shown creative activities in the field of performance art (Clean), happening (Libros a medida) and video (Desaparición de la Universidad). Since 1991 his work has been on show in a variety of exhibition halls and museums. He is member of the Unión de Profesionales de la Imagen y Fotografía de Catalunya (UPIFC).

Wiberg
Yann Bautista Wiberg was born in Sweden, the 28th June 1972, and currently lives in Madrid. He began studying photography in 1944 at the T.A.I. (Spain). He has taken part, amongst other exhibitions, in "Lapones 96" AITE Museum (Sweden) and in the Luis Valluela II International prize for humanitarian photography in 1999. He also has publications in "Desnivel" and "Planeta Humano" and has worked on reports for the Andorra Commission at the U.N. in New York.

Rodríguez Ortiz
Marina del Mar Rodríguez Ortiz began to work professionally in 1988 as a press photographer. She worked for the "Diario Ideal" in Almeria until 1991 simultaneously covering as local press agent for Diario 16 and El País. In 1994 after publishing "La Chanca" for "El Mundo Magazine" she became a regular contributor of it. That year she achieved the "Rosa Pardo" award for photography that was taken in the Plaza Castilla Court. In 1996 she decided to abandon the daily press in order to dedicate herself totally to reporting the opening up of a new stage in her career working free-lance. In 1997 she was awarded first prize for the Reporting category in the Fujifilm competition for her work on anorexia, and was elected as Spanish Press Photographer 1999, representing Spain in the European phase of the VI Fujifilm prize Europe in Istanbul. In 1998 she began working for the Group Correo producing portraits for the weekly supplementary Panorama.

Bertrand Desprez lives and works in paris. Since 1990 he has collaborated regularly with "Liberation," "L'Express," "Telerama"...The report through which he was first 'discovered' is about three groups of Parisian adolescents and was awarded a prize by the C.C.F. Foundation for Photography. In 1997 he exhibited in Tokyo and Kyoto which in turn led him to begin a report about Japanese youth. And it is precisely in Japan where he put together the Finalist Portfolio of PHE99.

Sergio Belinchón (Valencia, 1971) studied photography in the School of Arts of Valencia and has also trained in various workshops under Koldo Chamorro, Cristina García Rodero, Eli Reed, Eddie Adams, Gervasio Sánchez, Ivo Saglietti, amongst others. In 1999 he received a scholarship from the Spanish Academy in Rome and was selected for the Biennial of Tenerife. In addition to this he has had two exhibitions (School of Arts of Huesca, Photography space of Almussafes) and has taken part in a collective exhibition (Canal Hall of Isabel II, Madrid. He also edited the book "Metrópolis" with Mestizo A.C.
