"LIQUID VIEWS"

versión en español

Liquid Views is an unencumbered virtual reality installation which uses a touch screen as an interface.

The water's surface, the gentle waves and the sounds of water convince us that we are before a sort of artificial nature. Liquid Views imitates the effect of rippling water in a well. The visitor approaches this "well" and sees his image reflected in the water, threading through a fluid sphere of digital images. The visitor attempts to participate by touching the water's surface and in turn provokes more waves, to the point of distorting his own telematic reflection. The more he touches the screen, the more his image dissolves. After a certain amount of time untouched, the water settles again and becomes a liquid mirror once more. The objective of this installation is to find a reference point in a world of reactive, fluid images by experimenting with the disorientation caused by the interaction.

Equipment used: two Silicon Graphics supercomputers, video camera, touch screen.

Monika Fleischmann (1950) and Wolfgang Strauss (1951) studied in the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. Fleischmann trained in art and theatre. Before starting her work in media art and computers, she was an art and theatre professor who worked collaboratively with psychiatrists in the fields of psychodrama and Gestalt therapy, studying the different ways we perceive the world. Wolfgang Strauss has a background in architecture and design. He has realized both installation and performance work on themes such as space, the house, the room, and the body. They are co-founders of Art+Com in Berlin (1988), the first of a series of interdisciplinary research centres in Germany that combine the work of experts in both art and media technology. They are currently continuing their research at GMD (German National Research Center for Information Technology), one of the most advanced and best-equipped centres in Germany where they have access to supercomputers. There they collaborate with Christian A. Bohn (1963) who studied in the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt. His research is focused on new forms of presence: scientific visualization, neural nets and virtual reality.
