Media Architecture Installations is an Interom, that is to say a CD-ROM that can access an Internet site. Based on a selection of twelve works that primarily address architecture and media - two major aspects of the work of Antoni Muntadas - the CD-ROM presents the artist's overall oeuvre since the early 1970s. The interface is based on an imaginary space that superimposes four distinct levels: observatory, auditorium, library, and airport. The 'observatory' offers access to Muntadas' new Internet project Hybridspaces. The 'auditorium' makes it possible to consult the artist's preliminary drawings and notes, testifying to the work of conceiving each piece. In the 'library' the user can select one of seven keywords evoking the major concepts and working principles that underlie Muntadas' entire oeuvre: archetype, context, archives, project, in/visible, montage and media. Works from different periods are interrelated here. The 'airport' provides a path to works through the various cities where they were produces, evoking the geographical, social context of each exhibition.

Each of these levels provides access to a detailed description of these twelve installations and actions in public spaces. from the menu users can consult several databases: 156 descriptive files plus over 140 critical articles, interviews and texts by Muntadas. Media Architecture Installations is an archive as well as an artist's work.

MUNTADAS
nov 18 - jan 09, 2000

Antoni Muntadas focuses his artistic activity on a critique of the media including not only television, the press, and advertising, but also architecture and Internet spheres. The core of his oeuvre since 1971 consits mainly of videotapes, installations and actions in public spaces. By 'reading between the lines' to grasp the objective and subjective meanings of language and images, Muntadas deals with the 'invisible mechanism' that shape the production and reception of today's media discourse.
