| ABSTRACT: |
"Virtual Reality: What does the Future Hold?"During the late 1980's and early '90s, there was a great deal of public (and media) interest in virtual reality. The promises made for the technology seemed boundless and a major revolution was forecast. The ardor has cooled by now, or at least the media attention. We'll examine the realities of virtual reality technology, where we've been, where we are, and speculate on where we may go. The focus of the talk will be on immersive virtual environments, in keeping with the author's background and experience. We'll look at the current state of the art and the forthcoming developments in the basic enabling technologies necessary for virtual environments: image generation, tracking, and display. |
| BIOGRAPHY: | Anselmo Lastra is a researcher working on image generators for high-performance interactive computer graphics and virtual environments. He is currently a Research Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He leads the software design effort for the Pixel-Planes/PixelFlow research team. The group is currently working on PixelFlow, a scalable graphics computer expected to perform more than an order of magnitude faster than their previous machine, Pixel-Planes 5. Lastra received Ph. D. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from Duke University and a B.S.E.E. from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior to coming to North Carolina, he was a project manager at Coulter Electronics, leading the development of medical instruments, and was a consultant at AT & T Bell Laboratories. |
