Biographies


Montxo ALGORA

Artist and Event Organizer. Studied at the Madrid School of Architecture and at the New York School of Visual Arts. As an Art Director collaborated with Digital Productions and other computer graphic companies in Los Angeles. In 1988 he presented his projection show "Pájaros de Fuego" in Barcelona with music by La Fura dels Baus. In 1990 he founded ART FUTURA and has directed or co-directed its six editions (Madrid and Barcelona) which have showcased the work of Laurie Anderson, Stelarc, Yoichiro Kawaguchi, Brian Eno, Karl Sims, William Gibson, Survival Research Laboratories, Moebius, Zbig Rybczynski, Future Sound of London, Sherry Turkle and others. In 1992 he directed "Memory Palace", a performance show based on an original text by William Gibson with images by Karl Sims, Rebecca Allen, Mark Pellington and music by Peter Gabriel and others.

Carlota ALVAREZ BASSO

Diploma of "Maîtrise en Sociologie" from the Université de Nanterre, Paris. Has a Degree in Sociology from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid where she also took Doctorate courses in Theory of Communication. She is in charge of the Department of Audiovisual Works of Art in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid since 1992. She has produced and coordinated numerous exhibitions including: Bill Viola "Más Allá de la Mirada" ('93); "Bruce Nauman: Inside Out" ('93-'94); "Stan Douglas" ('94); "Cocido y Crudo" ('94-'95); "Natividad Navalón" ('95); "Sincronías" ('95); "Zaj" (´96). Curator of numerous shows and exhibitions including: "Visiones Privadas" (´93-'94, México); "La Caverna" ('94, MNCARS); "La Videoteca Itinerante del MNCARS" ('95-'96, Argentina, Cuba, Guatemala, Nicaragua). She has also directed, coordinated and produced more than 35 film and video series and directed and produced 31 documentary videos on the museum's exhibitions.

Xavier BERENGUER

(Barcelona, 1947) has a PhD in Engineering from the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña. Was professor at this university during 8 years, working in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, and visiting professor at the University of California (Riverside and Berkeley). During this period, published various research works in the areas of operative research and theory of computer science. Has worked on projects of computer science applied to management, to assisted teaching, to software engineering and to arquitecture. In 1984 he founded ANIMÀTICA, S.A., one of the first producers of computer animation in Europe, which he directed until 1992, after producing some 300 pieces of synthetic images. On these subjects, he has published various articles and has given numerous lectures. Has published various works on computers, science, technology, etc., as well as two books of fiction. Has written television scripts and a few short films. Presently he is Professor at the Universidad Pompeu Fabra. He gives classes on new technologies and audiovisuals at different levels and is Director of the Instituto Universitario del Audiovisual http://www.iua.upf.es.

Daniel CANOGAR

Has a Degree in Visual Communication from the Department of Communiation of the Universidad Complutense of Madrid. In 1989 receives his Masters in Fine Arts, with a specialization in photography, from New York University. Some of his exhibitions include: Metronom, Barcelona; Sculpture Center, New York; Centro de Arte Santa Mónica, Barcelona; Fundación "La Caixa", Sala Catalunya, Barcelona; Magasin, Centre National D'Art Contemporain de Grenoble, France; Artists Space, New York. His work is in private and public collections including: Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Fondo Nacional de Arte Contemporáneo, Paris; FRAC Midi-Pyrenées, Toulousse; Instituto de la Juventud, Madrid; Fundación Rafael Tous de Arte Contemporáneo, Barcelona; Fundación Arte y Tecnología, Telefónica, Madrid. Writes regularly for various specialized magazines on art, architecture, photography and new technology.

Fernando CASTRO FLORES

(Plasencia, 1964) Assistant Director of the Instituto de Estética y Teoría de las Artes (Institute of Aesthetics and Theory of the Arts). PhD in Philosophy from the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid. Art critic for Diario 16. Member of the Editorial Board for the magazines Creación, Sibila and El Urogallo. Writes regularly for Cuadernos Hispanoamericanos, El Guía, Arte Omega, Revista de Occidente, etc. Member of the Advisory Board for the Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo. Honorary Member of Expo-Arte Guadalajara. Advisor to the Argentaria Collection. Advisor to the Prosegur Collection. Director of the International Meetings in Contemporary Art of ARCO. Received the Espais Award for Art Criticism (1994). Director of the National Congress of Philosophy. Published books: "Narciso y Acteón", "Franz Kafka, el nombre olvidado", "El texto íntimo", "Eugenio Granell, encantador de serpientes", "Bocetos". Curator of exhibitions (Tony Cragg, Nacho Criado, Arte en Madrid años 90, Arte en Espacios Públicos, etc.). Has written texts for several art catalogs including those on the work of Palazuelo, Carlos León, Eduardo Arroyo and Rosa Brun.

Estrella DE DIEGO

Professor of Contemporary Art at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid. She has studied in England, Finland, and the United States as a Fulbight scholar in the Institute of Fine Arts. Specializing in the XIX and XX centuries, her research is focused on subjects related to the representational strategies of contemporary art. Has published numerous articles in Spanish and foreign magazines and is the author of a considerable number of contributions to catalogs and books including "La mujer y la pintura del XIX español" and "El andrógino sexuado". Has curated, among others, the following exhibitions: "Po(e/li)tical Object", "Spanish Art Spanish Prints in the 80s", "Desde Occidente", the Spanish representation in the last Bienal of Sao Paulo y "Los cuerpos perdidos. La fotografía y los surrealistas".

Javier ECHEVERRIA EZPONDA

Pamplona in 1948. He has a Degree in Mathematics and a PhD in Philosophy from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, and is a Docteur d'Etat des Lettres from the Sorbona in Paris. Head of the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science of the Universidad del Pais Vasco and President of the Society of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science in Spain. He has been the Vice-rector of Research and International Relations for the Universidad del Pais Vasco from 1985 to 1990. Has published several books, the most recent being: "Telepolis", Barcelona, Destino, 1994; "Cosmopolitas domésticos", Barcelona, Anagrama, 1995; "Filosofía de la Ciencia", Madrid, Akal, 1995.

Pedro GARHEL

(1952, Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife) is a media artist. Founder and Director of Espacio "P", a centre for the development of intermedia activities for the past 15 years. Also formed the performance group Depósito Dental with Rosa Galindo. Presently he is a Professor of Computer Art in the Universidad de Salamanca, Spain. He has participated in numerous projects, exhibitions, installations, performances and concerts since the early 70s. Has received several prizes and mentions in national and international festivals. His work has been shown in museums and festivals all over the world, including: Dokumenta de Kassel, Ars Electrónica, etc.

Antonio GOLDEROS SANCHEZ

Doctor of Communication Technologies Engineering from the E.T.S.I.T. of Madrid (1973). Master in business management from the IESE. He remained closely associated to the University, where he taught and carried out research until 1988. He has published numerous art¡cles nationally and internationally and has collaborated in editing several books. Since 1975 up until the present, his professional life has been associated to Telefónica of Spain where he has held several positions of which the following stand out: In charge of the development of the Electronic Switch board UPC-101. Responsible for the development of the Multiaccess Rural System (MAR), to cover the telephone service of rural areas via radioelectrical systems. Chief of Area for the Coordination and Preindustrialization of Development. Assistant Manager of Development of the I+D Department of Telefónica, whose work consists of promoting, coordinating, budgeting and running its activities. Manager of Services in charge of the development and installation of the TESYS system of the IBERPAC network. Manager of the Department of Basic Technologies of Telefónica Research and Development (Telefónica I+D). Manager of the Department of Advanced Voice Services of Telefónica, whose responsibility consists of the definition of the services, the necessary infrastructure and its exploitation. Presently, he holds the position of General Manager of Telefónica Research and Development (Telefónica I+D), which he has held since April of 1995. Telefónica I+D is an affiliated company of Telefónica that is fundamentally dedicated to the carrying out of activities including hiring, technological studies, applied research, exploratory developments of products, for Telefónica as well as for other clients. He is directly or indirectly in charge of approximately 1,000 people.

José JIMENEZ

Born in Madrid, has a PhD in Philosophy. Professor since 1975 in the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid, and from 1983, Department Head of Aesthetics. Doctor Honoris Causa from the Universidad de La Plata (Argentina). Is the Director of the Instituto de Estética y Teoría de las Artes (Institute of Aesthetics and Theory of the Arts), a platform that establishes a collaborative meeting and work place for artists, critics and philosophers. Director of the magazine Creación which has been published since 1989. Amongst his published work the following stand out: "El ángel caído. La imagen artística del ángel en el mundo contemporáneo", (Anagrama, Barcelona, 1982); "La estética como utopía antropológica. Bloch and Marcuse", (Tecnos, Madrid, 1983); "Filosofía y emancipación", (Espasa-Calpe, Madrid, 1984); "Imágenes del hombre. Fundamentos de Estética", (Tecnos, Madrid, 1986); "La vida como azar. Complejidad de lo moderno", (Mondadori, Madrid, 1989); "Cuerpo y tiempo. La imagen de la metamorphosis (Destino, Barcelona, 1993).

Francisco JARAUTA

Department Head of Philosophy at the Universidad de Murcia. Has studied History, Art History and Philosophy in the following universities: Valencia, Roma, Múnster-Westf. and Paris. Invited Professor of European and American universitites, his work focuses especially on the area of the philosophy of culture, aesthetics and the theory of art. Amongst his numerous publications are the following essays: "Kierkegaard: los límites de la dialéctica del individuo" (1975), "La filosofía y su otro" (1977), "Fragmento y totalidad: los límites del clasicismo" (1988), etc. Is the Editor of: "La crisis de la rázon" (1985), "Rázon, ética y política" (1988), "La transformación de la conciencia moderna" (1991), "Walter Benjamin: tiempo, lenguaje, metrópoli" (1992), "Pensar el presente" (1993), "Barroco y Neobarroco" (1993), "Tensiones del arte y la cultura en el fin de siglo" (1993), "Pensar - Componer/Construir Habitar" (1994), "Otra mirada sobre la época" (1994), etc. Has curated several international exhibitions and is a member of the scientific committee of "Iride", "Experimenta", etc. Coordinates the International Seminar on Analisis of Tendencies (Arteleku, San Sebastián), the "Foro de los 90" (Murcia), initiatives that unite relevant thinkers of contemporary culture. Directs the "Arquilectura" collection. Is member of the group "Geo-philosophie de l'Europe" (Strasbourg). Presently, he is Vicepresidente of the Board of Trustees of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.

Emilio LOPEZ-GALIACHO

Architect and musician. Presently he directs the Research and Development department of the Madrid-based company ARQUIMEDIA, focusing his work on the relationship between Arquitecture, New Media and Cyberspace. He was born in 1960 and is a graduate of the Universidad Politecnica of Madrid. Since 1985 his practical work has included building and set design projects, musical compositions and multimedia presentations. He teaches at the Tracor Arts School of Madrid. Currently his research is concerned with multimediality in and between architectural tissues and their inter relationships with virtual parallel worlds.

Antonio MAYO

(Asturias) 23-5-57. Journalist, specializing in scientific subjects, scouting and the relationship between art and technology. Director of radio programs such as ESPEJISMO and GONOSIANA-3 (RADIO-3); FUTUROPOLIS and FRONTERAS (Onda Madrid). Contributor to MUY INTERESANTE, EL PAIS (FUTURO), CONOCER and TELOS. Managing director of FUNDATEC. Presently he is Executive Director of the company REALIDAD VIRTUAL S.L. and Co-Director of the ART FUTURA festival.

Karin OHLENSCHLÄGER

Has a Degree in Art History and has worked for oîears in Spain, specializing in the area of electronic art. She was in charge of the activities of the Video Forum Internacional, in the old Museo Español de Arte Contemporáneo de Madrid (1986-88) and has curated numerous shows and exhibitions of video and computer graphics, amongst them the Retrospective of Spanish Computer Graphics "Todo Fluye" (Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, 1995). As an advisor she works with, among others, the Festival Internacional de Video de Cádiz. Author of numerous articles and studies on electronic art. Presently she directs Proyectos Culturales, s.l., an administrative organization of activities having to do with art and new communiation technologies.

Maria PALLIER

Born in 1960. Studied linguistics and media science in Graz, Austria. In 1990, founded Trimarán Arts Promotion in Madrid. Since 1995 is co-director for Ciberría (Symposium on electronic art and culture) in Bilbao. Contributor to the weekly TV-program on art and culture, Metropolis, on TVE (Televisión Española) in Madrid.
