Sobre la obra
Este dispositivo crea una serie de copias de una planta de cebolla en proceso de crecimiento a partir de imágenes escaneadas en 3D e impresiones, generando una copia cada 24 horas desde uno de los tres ángulos posibles. Mientras el láser escanea la cebolla, se acciona también una máquina de modelado por deposición fundida que utiliza plástico ABS para crear las copias. Se podría decir que el resultado del proceso es mecánico y estéril, ya que cada copia queda expuesta a intervalos de distancia regulares sobre una cinta transportadora que se aleja del mecanismo de escaneo e impresión, en circuito cerrado. Entonces, ¿qué esperamos de este proceso de congelación visual y mecánica del metabolismo de una planta? ¿Qué supone el llamativo retrato escultórico momentáneo de un objeto que, como ya sabemos, dejará de existir una vez que haya completado su ciclo vital? Como es habitual, la simpleza de las esculturas impresas en 3D resulta cautivadora: en realidad, su única pretensión es representar un objeto común con fidelidad asombrosa. Esta sencillez pone en evidencia lo ambiguo de la tarea de grabación repetitiva, en la que el ser humano –que no es más que un mero observador– no sólo no está presente en la mayor parte del proceso, sino que es sustituido por una máquina implacable. A pesar de contar con el incentivo de la expectativa casi trascendente que experimenta el que se sabe en posición de tentar al orden que impregna el mundo visible, a modo de reminiscencia de algunas características del mejor arte conceptual, el ser humano no puede sino verse envuelto en un sentimiento de resignación.
